Always take the center square on your first move. The center participates in 4 winning lines (row, column, both diagonals) — more than any other square. This forces your opponent into a reactive position immediately.
Racing to king pieces without controlling the center. Pieces in the center exert pressure in multiple directions. In the opening, advance center pieces first to build a dominant position before going for kings.
The center column (column 4). It participates in more possible 4-in-a-row combinations than any other column. Controlling it early forces your opponent into defensive responses.
They use a mental map — associating each grid position with a location in a room (the memory palace technique). They also track every card their opponent flips, not just their own, turning every flip into useful information.
Use a coil strategy. Rather than chasing food aggressively, coil your snake in an open area of the board. A coiled snake always has room to continue and is much harder to trap than a snake that's been chasing food across the arena.
